RACHMUTH: Duke University Is Not A Safe Space For Jews

By Sloan Rachmuth

It should come as no surprise that Duke University is making headlines this time of year. The highly prestigious private school is a college basketball powerhouse that tends to dominate sports pages as March Madness approaches. But this year, the stories aren’t just related to athletics. Duke has been steeped in anti-Semitism that is being green-lighted by the student newspaper and leftist student groups.

The Duke campus has been the target of numerous anti-Semitic incidents in just the past few months, including destruction of Jewish property, genocidal expression, demonizing Jews and delegitimizing the Jewish state’s right to exist, according to the anti-Semitism watchdog group AMCHA Initiative.

A recent editorial in the student newspaper, The Chronicle, describes Israel as a “murderous” country with “genocidal policies.” Titled, “AIPAC And The Blockade On Critiquing Israel,” the piece, authored by the editorial board, defends the “ill-conceived wording” of Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar‘s recent tweet invoking the old anti-Semitic canards of Jewish power and money.

“The defense of and expansion on Omar’s overt and classic anti-Semitic trope…and calls for Duke students to engage in activism to economically cripple Israel…are reprehensible,” said AMCHA Initiative director Tammi Rossman-Benjamin. “The fact that this editorial was written by the entire editorial board of the official student paper, not an individual or a known anti-Zionist group like Students for Justice in Palestine or Jewish Voice for Peace, indicates that these anti-Semitic tropes have become completely normalized on that campus. That’s really frightening.”

Joining Rossman-Benjamin in condemning The Chronicle’s editorial board was David Brog, executive director of the anti-Semitism education group Maccabee Task Force:

How sad that students at such a prestigious university have such a simplistic view of so complex an issue. They condemn Israel’s self-defense in Gaza without ever mentioning the Hamas aggression that necessitates it. They label Israel a settler-colonial state without ever acknowledging the fact that Jews are indigenous to this land. And they double down on the anti-Semitic theory that Jewish lobbyists manipulate politicians into supporting Israel while ignoring the widespread support for Israel among their constituents. I hope that one day the authors of this article have the opportunity to study this issue more deeply and supplement their stereotypes with some facts.

Several Jewish students on the Durham, North Carolina campus have told the Haym Salomon Center that the op-ed created a negative atmosphere for Jews on campus. Junior Max Cherman and freshman Ezra Loeb responded to the editorial with a piece, “The Chronicle’s Editorial Board Embodies 21st Century Anti-Semitism.”

Cherman and Loeb received support from many students and alumni who also found the editorial disturbing. But it’s the response from other Duke students, who seem to regard the editorial as a license to hate, that has some students questioning whether to remain at Duke.

Anti-Semitism at Duke is not a recent phenomenon, but it has spiked over the past few months. University president Vincent E. Price issued a statement right before Thanksgiving, which reads in part:

I write you this morning with a deep sense of frustration and sorrow: last night, a tribute on the East Campus Bridge to the victims of the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre was defaced by a large, red swastika. That such a craven and cowardly act of vandalism — a desecration of a memorial to individuals who were killed because they were Jewish and practicing their faith — should happen anywhere is extremely distressing. That it should occur in such a visible, public location at Duke should be a matter of grave concern to us all.

Posts on The Chronicle’s Facebook page reveal that intimidation and anti-Semitism are alive and thriving on the Durham campus.

A member of the far-left anti-Israel group Students for Justice in Palestine posted a meme mocking Jewish Duke students who were made to feel uncomfortable by The Chronicle’s article. “Let’s also not forget Israel’s habit of forcibly sterilizing African/black+brown immigrants,” posted another student.

The current hostile climate on campus toward Jewish students wasn’t initiated by The Chronicle’s editorial board. Back in October, just two weeks after swastikas were found in the language arts building, Duke seniors Sanjidah Ahmed and Hadeel Abdelhy lambasted the university’s efforts to build dialogue as “both ludicrous and shameful,” claiming Israel engages in “the annihilation of Palestinian people.”

This past May, anti-Semitic posters were found in Durham and on Duke’s east campus.

“I was deeply disturbed and, to be honest, frightened,” explained professor Gavin Yamey. “I’m Jewish, and these vile anti-Semitic threats, including the image of a gun pointed at a Jew, really rattled me.”

“I lost family to pogroms and in the Holocaust,” he added. “Seeing incitements to shoot Jews in my hometown is not something I ever imagined.”

Request for comment from The Chronicle editorial board went unanswered.

One victim butchered with zombie knives in Snapchat video

London’s crime epidemic continues to spiral out of control as police were called to five stabbing incidents across the city in less than 24 hours, with one man’s killing by thugs wielding “zombie knives” broadcast on Snapchat.

Four of the attacks took place between 1:50pm and 9pm on Tuesday, the Daily Mail reports.

In east London, Alwi Jamal, 20, was found deceased outside Ilford train station.

Witnesses say Jamal was “slashed in the face” outside a betting shop and subsequently hunted down and killed.

“They chased after him, two people with knives – zombie knives, black with a silver blade,” one witness said. “They stabbed him in his chest. There was two of them. I’ve also seen the Snapchat video. It was a fight over money and drugs.”

In west London, a young man was discovered at South Ruislip station suffering from a stab wound to the stomach.

“I saw a school boy in uniform stabbed in the side and he didn’t look in a good way,” a witness said. “He was face down on the pavement and was shaking. Think he was in shock.”

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and doctors say his injuries are not life-threatening.

In Enfield, police responding to calls regarding an altercation found a man in his 30s with a stab wound to his thigh.

He was taken to hospital and later released.

Also in Enfield, three male suspects in their 20s were arrested under suspicion of attempted murder of a man who was critically injured in a stabbing attack.

In Romford, an 18-year-old man was treated for “serious” stab wounds by the London Ambulance Service.

London experienced its most deadly year in a decade in 2018 with 135 homicides, 76 of which were stabbings.

London also recently surpassed New York City’s murder rate for the first time ever.

WATCH: Democrat Rep. Compares Border Agents To Nazis ‘Back In Germany’

By RYAN SAAVEDRA

Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) compared federal U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents to Nazis “back in Germany” on Tuesday during a hearing on the border in the House Judiciary Committee.

“As I’ve been listening here, I’ve been struck a couple times by the denial of humanity of many of these families and children,” Scanlon said. “When the issue is framed as an invasion by aliens and when we refer to children as UACs, it’s easier to pretend that they’re not human and worthy of compassion.”

“When you say that the cause of migration is legal loopholes or bad judicial decisions, rather than the dire conditions of violence and poverty in these people’s home countries that’s literally driving them from home, I think it’s easier to slam the door against these kids and these families,” Scanlon continued. “This hearing is a recognition and an insistence that on that humanity…a recognition that just following orders is no more an excuse today than it was back in Germany.”

WATCH:

This is not the first time that Democratic lawmakers have demonized federal law enforcement officials to push their open-borders agenda.

In November, The Daily Wire reported that “Democratic California Senator Kamala Harris compared Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) during a Senate hearing” and “appeared to suggest that they act like a terrorist organization toward foreign nationals who are illegally in the United States.”

“Harris made the comparison during a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing to consider the nomination of Ronald Vitello to be the new director of ICE,” The Daily Wire added. “Harris asked Vitiello about comments he previously made in which he referred to the Democratic Party as ‘liberalcratic’ or ‘NeoKlanist,’ in an attempt to publicly shame him. Harris repeatedly pressed him to explain why he made the remark and why the remark was wrong for him to make.”

“The Klan was what we could call today a domestic terrorist group,” said Vitiello.

“Why?” Harris asked. “Why would we call them a domestic terrorist group?”

“Because they tried to use fear and force to change the political environment,” Vitiello responded.

“And what was the motivation for the use of fear and force?” Harris continued.

“It was based on race and ethnicity, “ Vitiello answered.

“Right, and are you aware of the perception of many about how the power and discretion at ICE is being used to enforce the law and do you see any parallels?” Harris asked.

“I do not see any parallels between sworn officers and agents —” Vitiello said before he was cut off.

“I’m talking about perception,” Harris fired back.

“I do not see a parallel between what is constitutionally mandated as it related to enforcing the law,” Vitiello replied. “I see no perception that puts ICE in the same category as the KKK.”

WATCH:

Other Democratic lawmakers, like Sen. Mazie Hirono (HI), have at times been unaware of basic immigration terminology policy and have had to be educated by federal officials during hearings.

In July, The Daily Wire reported that “Matthew T. Albence, Executive Associate Director for Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) at ICE had to inform Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) that illegal aliens face prosecution because they have broken the law.”

“Mr. Albence, would you send your children to FRCs?” Hirono asked.

“Again, I think we’re missing the point,” Albence responded. “These individuals are there because they have broken a law. There has to be a process.”

“They have broken a law but only as deemed so by the president with his —” Hirono replied before being cut off.

“No ma’am,” Albence shot back. “They are there for violation of Title 8 of the U.S. Nationality Act. Okay. U.S.C. 1325. That’s illegal entry is both a criminal and civil violation. They are in those FRCs pending the outcome of that civil immigration process. They have broken the law.”

UPS Suspends Deliveries in Swedish ‘No-Go Zone’ Citing Attacks on Drivers

International logistics giant UPS has suspended all home deliveries in Rosengård, Sweden, citing attacks on drivers, according to local media.

After a Rosengård photographer did not receive a package he had ordered, he contacted the seller to find out why and was reportedly told UPS could not deliver to his house, “because of the risk of being subjected to robbery or other crimes.”

A UPS Sweden spokesperson confirmed the policy in response to an inquiry by Fria Tider, saying, “Our drivers have been attacked and therefore we have decided not to hand out packages in Rosengård.”

Rosengård, a district in culturally-enriched Malmö known as one of Sweden’s worst ‘no-go zones,’ has been described by the London Times as a place where migrant teens “roam the streets with rifles,” and where bombings and attacks on police are common.

More than 80 percent of Rosengård’s population was not born in Sweden and roughly 90 percent of residents are Muslim.

Sweden’s postal service, PostNord, has reportedly been forced to suspend deliveries in Rosengård on multiple occasions in recent years, as well.

“The postmen can go there without being threatened, but if we drive there with the package car they will be threatened,” a PostNord spokesman told Aftonbladet. “It has to do with the value, what is in the packages.”

“We must think of our staff first.”

In 2017, electrical maintenance company Högs EL announced it could no longer serve customers in Malmö, citing a “prevailing security risk” posed by “violence and shootings” in the area.

Rage and puzzlement over Muslim woman in hijab chosen for Swedish municipality’s welcome sign

Screen Shot 2019-02-25 at 9.15.48 AM

A Swedish municipality is facing backlash after selecting a local Muslim woman wearing a headscarf to be the ‘poster girl’ for its roadside ‘welcome’ sign. Her past ties to a controversial local imam were also discovered.

The municipality said it was a gesture celebrating the diversity of its community, which counts over 100,000 people of various origins and cultures. But some saw it as a signal of support for suppressing women’s freedoms.

“One should think what this is signaling. Some indeed use this garment, the hijab, voluntarily. But not everyone. This a garment that for millions of women around the world represents a lack of freedom,” said Sweden Democrats MP Roger Hedlund, a member of the municipality council, as quoted by the news website Nyheter Idag.

The Sweden Democrats party has an anti-immigration platform and currently holds 62 seats in the 349-seat Swedish parliament. Samhallsnytt, an online publication reportedly close to the party, was quick to dig Hindi’s past ties to a controversial local imam, who was accused of preaching radical ideas and collecting money for terrorists in Iraq and Syria.

Indeed, in 2009 the woman, who called herself Nizam Hindi at the time, was featured in a story by the left-leaning tabloid Arbetarbladet about the opening of a mosque in Gavle. She explained how having their own prayer house was good for the Swedish municipality’s Muslim community, how aid from Saudi Arabia and Qatar helped to buy and furnish the building, and how listening to the imam is important during the prayer.

The Al-rashideen mosque and its imam, Abu Raad, were involved in a scandal a few years ago, after the leading local newspaper Gefle Dagblad accused him of spreading radical Salafist ideas and collecting money for terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq.

The editor-in-chef received death threats over the criticism. The man who issued the threats was sentenced to two months in jail.

It was not immediately clear whether Hindi is still associated with the mosque.

Gavle itself was the scene of a national scandal in Sweden two years ago, when six people were tried for the abduction and murder of 23-year-old Afghan man Ramin Sherzaj over an extramarital affair. Five received life sentences for the crime, while one got a 14-year jail term.

The woman involved in the affair, who was a relative of the defendants, left her husband for a brief relationship with Sherzaj. It apparently ended badly, since the man then sent photos of him kissing the woman to her husband’s family members. This led to them banding together to carry out the honor killing.
