Dems Worry Northam Could Derail Using Race Against Trump in 2020

Democrats are worried that Virginia Gov. Ralph Northamâs racist yearbook photo will hurt their efforts to use race as an issue against President Trump in 2020, according to a report.
âA racist photo in Virginia Gov. Ralph Northamâs yearbook entry has become a national political concern for Democrats, threatening to complicate their bid to draw a sharp contrast with President Trump and the Republican Party on race ahead of the 2020 election,â the Washington Post reported Monday.
Democrat lawmakers and activists swiftly called for Northamâs resignation, signaling that their party would not tolerate racism. But Northamâs refusal to leave âcould complicate the message,â an anonymous Democrat lawmaker told the Post.
Northam on Friday apologized for appearing in the photo on his 1984 medical school yearbook page, after it was published in Big League Politics. It showed two people â one in blackface, and the other in a Ku Klux Klan robe. Another photo showed that his nickname was âCoonman.â
But on Saturday, he held a press conference where he denied he was in the photo altogether, but then admitted to wearing blackface during a Michael Jackson moonwalk contest.
The photos raised questions about the time Northam refused to shake the hand of an African American opponent for lieutenant governor of Virginia in 2013. Then-opponent E.W. Jackson tweeted on Sunday, âAnd that wasnât Northam in the video of him refusing to shake my hand. That was his evil twin!â
The resurfacing of the photos comes at an awkward time for Democrats â when 2020 hopefuls are announcing their bids, and hoping to run on racial inequality.
âWe ⌠expect candidates â and the broader progressive movement â to commit to an inclusive and motivating message in 2020 that addresses both economic and racial inequality,â Maria Urbina, Indivisibleâs national political director, told Politico in November.
After Northamâs photos were published Friday, 2020 hopefuls Sens. Kamala Harris (CA), Cory Booker (NJ), Elizabeth Warren (MA), Bernie Sanders (VT), Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), and Julian Castro called for Northam to resign.
Gillibrand first called on Northam to explain, but then later called on him to resign.
The photo could also hurt Democrats with African American voters, with whom Trump has made inroads.
âThe recent, more explicit rhetoric on race among potential 2020 Democratic hopefuls ⌠is at least partly strategic. Black voters are likely to be decisive in many 2020 primaries, especially in the South,â wrote Politicoâs Alex Thompson.
A former Hillary Clinton adviser texted Thompson, âItâs fairly simpleâs/he who wins the black vote, wins the primary.â
But there was âanger and sadnessâ among some African Americans in Virginia in response to Northamâs photo, according to another article in the Post.
âHonestly, he was in med school, so heâs not a child,â Pierre Hartgrove, 55, told the Post.
âI thought he was a good guy, actually. Does he not really like blacks? All these years, did he get the votes from us, did he say to his buddies, âGuess what? I got the Negroesâ votes!â We donât know,â he said.

Gavin McInnes is suing the Southern Poverty Law Center after the group designated his former organization The Proud Boys as an extremist hate group and accused McInnes of advocating violence.
The SPLC officially designates McInnes former organization, The Proud Boys, as an extremist hate group and their website contains numerous articles about McInnes himself.
An article entitled Why are the Proud Boys so violent? Ask Gavin McInnes asserts, âViolence is at the core of their ideology and their primary tool for silencing their political foesâ and blames McInnes for âblatantly promoting violence and making threats.â
The national demonization campaign against McInnes has come at personal cost to the former VICE co-founder. A Daily Beast article revels in the fact that he faces regular confrontations with and harassment from his neighbors.
During a September appearance on Infowars, McInnes complained that George Soros was âpaying people to mess with my life, and spread these lies about me, spread fake news.â
McInnes was also completely deplatformed by Twitter back in August.
McInnes is not the first high profile political figure to sue the SPLC in recent times.
Last year, the group was forced to pay out $3.4 million and issue an apology to British political activist Maajid Nawaz after they falsely listed him as an âanti-Muslim extremistâ (Nawaz is a Muslim reformist who campaigns against extremism).
A full press release containing more details of McInnesâ lawsuit against the SPLC will be made public later today and he will also appear on the Alex Jones Show.

Montgomery, AL â Talk show host Gavin McInnes has filed suit against the hyperpartisan Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) this week. The 61-page complaint was electronically filed early Monday morning in the Middle District of Alabama outlining defamation and other tortious acts resulting in reputational and economic damages.
The Canadian-immigrant talk show host is demanding an apology from the left-wing SPLC for purposefully misrepresenting his beliefs in a defamatory manner and the defamatory mischaracterization of a fraternal club he founded, Proud Boys.
McInnes is being represented by noted First Amendment attorney Ron D. Coleman of Mandelbaum Salsburg P.C. and Baron Coleman of the Baron Coleman Law Firm.
Gavin McInnes will appear in the city of Montgomery Monday morning to consult with his legal and advocacy team, making himself available to local members of the media and kick off the launch of a crowdfunding website, www.DefendGavin.com.
Attorney Ron Coleman emphasized the significance of the case in relation to the growing partisan divide and practice of censorship by stating, â[t]his lawsuit has implications beyond Gavin McInnes because weâre challenging the use of deplatforming and defunding to privately censor speech. If we canât stop this phenomenon now, the First Amendment will be rendered meaningless as dissent is silenced through private actors such as SPLC and its allies.â
Montgomery-based attorney Baron Coleman noting, âI wasnât familiar with Gavin or his work prior to beginning work on this case. But there is absolutely zero excuse in America for systematically targeting someone for complete personal and financial destruction because they support a different politician or different set of political beliefs. I wouldnât represent a racist or an anti-semite. And Gavin is neither. And the most horrific part of this entire ordeal is that the SPLC knows Gavin isnât a racist or anti-semite or anything else theyâve labeled him. Rather, he supports a different slate of politicians with his satire and wit, and the SPLC would rather destroy him than have him out there convincing other people to see politics his way.â
McInnes released the following statement:
I, Gavin McInnes, formerly of every job Iâve ever had, am announcing, as of today, a lawsuit against the SPLC. They have harassed me, my family, and my friends to a level of tortious interference that goes well into sabotage.
I am doing this, not just to protect my reputation and my family but to protect everyone elseâs. The SPLC has gone from a noble institution genuinely dedicated to eradicating hate to a hate group in and of itself that pretends this country is frothing with bigots desperate to foment WW3. They purposely lie about their enemies in an attempt to âdestroyâ them (their words) and itâs become a very effective way to make money. Scaremongering brought them the $50m their founder originally set out to make. Since then, itâs garnered hundreds of millions including untold millions in the Cayman Islands. I donât fault entrepreneurs but they are using this incredible wealth to wield power over the innocent and destroy careers and businesses in their insatiable need to generate more bigots because, in the world of SPLC fundraising, mo hate is mo money.
Ben Carson is an extremist to them. So is, Laura Ingraham, the Tea Party, Jeanine Pirro, a group of volunteer lawyers called Alliance Defending Freedom, the Center for Immigration Studies, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and Maajid Nawaz. Maajid was a jihadist who toned it down and became a moderate Muslim. For that, he was deemed an anti-Muslim extremist. He sued the SPLC and won. I intend to win too.
I have had enough â no, WE have had enough of America being portrayed as a racist, Islamophobic, sexist, homophobic etc etc hellhole where âWhite nationalistsâ have, âbecome emboldened in the age of Trump.â Itâs not true. The vast majority of us are good people and getting us fired and deplatformed because we dare to support the president isnât just a corrupt and immoral way to make money. Itâs not just immoral. Itâs un-American.
I have been completely kicked off all platforms including Paypal which I was using to help people get decent legal representation. Iâm unable to defend myself against the lies being spread around the Internet. My family has been attacked and so have my friends. The pro-Trump menâs club I started, the Proud Boys, have been rounded up and arrested facing serious felonies for daring to defend themselves against the radical left. Itâs not just my circle of conservative Christians. Seemingly countless business and careers have been âdestroyedâ (yes âdestroyedâ â their word) by this group. Leo Johnson was working security at the Family Research Council when he was shot by a man who saw them on the SPLCâs hate group list. The Steve Scalise shootings were inspired by the SPLCâs list. A professor at Middlebury College was hospitalized after daring to defend Charles Murray who was deemed verboten by the SPLC. When you see their hate map of America, youâd think you were living in Nazi Germany.
Itâs not just Twitter or a couple of apps. They are embedding themselves into Big Tech overall and getting involved with banks. Jennifer Morse runs The Ruth Institute, which is a group that prioritizes father / mother couples over gays in adoption procedures. Itâs a pretty mainstream stance but thanks to the SPLC, her bank has closed all her accounts. Why are we giving these random busybodies so much power?
Iâve had enough of this group pretending to fight hate while manifesting it out of thin air. Their relentless thirst for fake villains shows no signs of abating, and until we stop and say âNo,â they will continue to portray this country as a dark and disgusting Klan rally populated with bigots determined to torture those who disagree. Thatâs a lie. Itâs a profitable lie that has made them multi-millionaires with unlimited power but the buck stops here. Letâs fight back.

A picture from Democrat Virginia Governor Ralph Northamâs medical school yearbook surfaced on Friday showing two men, one in a KKK hood and robe and one in âblackfaceâ on the same page as Northam.
The photo was first published by Big League Politics on Friday and later confirmed by other outlets such as WaPo and The Virginian Pilot.
One half of the page shows Ralph Northam wearing a suit jacket and a tie, a photo of him in a cowboy hat and boots and another of him leaning up against a convertible.
On Saturday Governor Ralph Northam said the photo was not of him and Friday was the first time he saw the photo in blackface.

Photos of Northam at medical school show him standing with a man in the same plaid pants as the KKK-blackface photo.
Here is a Northam friend in the plaid pants in a regular college shot â And then in the blackface shot.
The pants were featured in another Northam college shot.
But the man on the right is wearing the same plaid pants as the blackfaced fellow in the yearbook.
The pants somehow made it on Northamâs yearbook page.

Virginia Democrat leadership is already coming out in defense of Governor Ralph Northamâs racist yearbook photo.

It is unclear who the two men in costume are, however Eastern Virginia Medical School allowed students to personally choose photos for their yearbook page.

A Ralph Northam ally, Senate Minority Leader Richard L. Saslaw (D-Fairfax) defended the governor saying we donât need to examine something that occurred 30 years ago â unless your name is Brett Kavanaugh of course!

âHis whole life has been about exactly the opposite and thatâs what you need to examine, not something that occurred 30 years ago,â said Senate Minority Leader Richard L. Saslaw (D-Fairfax). âWhile itâs in very poor taste, I would think no one in the General Assembly who would like their college conduct examined. I would hate to have to go back and examine my two years in the Army. Trust me. I was 18 years old and I was a handful, OK? His life since then has been anything but. Itâs been a life of helping people, and many times for free.â
Jack Wilson, the Chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia said if it is indeed Northam in the photo, he needs to resign.
âRacism has no place in Virginia,â Wilson said in a statement. âThese pictures are wholly inappropriate. If Governor Northam appeared in blackface or dressed in a KKK robe, he should resign immediately.â
Why are we just now finding out about Governor Ralph Northamâs 1984 yearbook with pictures of him presumably in blackface or a KKK robe?
Why did the Republican oppo researchers drop the ball during the Virginia gubernatorial election in 2017?
Ralph Northamâs yearbook would have been perfect fodder to attack the Democrat candidate with especially in Virginia.

An opinion columnist for The Arizona Republic newspaper penned an article in which he claimed that an old photograph of coal miners covered in soot was racist because it reminded him of âoffensive blackfaceâ.
Yes, really.
In a piece entitled Phoenix restaurant says this is a photo of coal miners. But I see offensive blackface, Rashaad Thomas relates the story of how he was triggered after seeing the photograph hanging on the wall in a downtown Phoenix bar.
Despite his friends telling him, âItâs coal miners at a pub after work,â Thomas demanded to speak to a manager, before he told someone he describes as a âwhite restaurant ownerâ that he found the photograph âoffensiveâ because he felt that it resembled blackface.
Thomas even directly admits that âthe photograph shows coal minersâ faces covered in soot,â but then ludicrously asserts that âcontextâ doesnât matter, only his feelings being hurt matters.
He then goes on to spout a series of pretentious platitudes such as âin art, everyone sees something differentâ to justify forcing the bar to take down the photograph.
After claiming that he is discriminated against because of his skin color, Thomas asserts, âAt the downtown Phoenix restaurant, my concern that the photograph of men in blackface was a threat to me and my face and voice were ignoredâŚ.A businessâ photograph of men with blackened faces culturally says to me, âWhites Only.â It says people like me are not welcome.â
This despite having already established that the photograph was of coal miners in a pub after work and was not white men engaging in âblackfaceâ.
The article concludes with Thomas demanding that the photo âshould be taken downâŚ.for the greater good.â
This entire farce once again underscores the soft tyranny that leftists are attempting to impose on the world, forcing other people to change their environmenMARt and bow to every demand simply because progressives claim their feelings are hurt.
As writer Andrew Doyle points out, the fictional character Godfrey Elfwick, a parody of a permanently offended social justice warrior, actually tweeted about being offended by the same photograph back in August, meaning leftists are now directly imitating comedic characters created to satirize them.
The New York Times also recently published an article claiming that Mary Poppinsâ face being covered in soot (she appears in a famous scene with chimney sweeps) is also actually an example of blackface.
When leftists precisely ape the behavior of fictional characters created to ridicule their oversensitivity, how is it even possible to joke about their behavior anymore?

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer revealed on Tuesday that defeated Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams will give the Democratic response to the State of the Union address.
âI was very delighted when she agreed,â Schumer confirmed to Zach Cohen, the National Journalâs Senate correspondent.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi formally invited President Donald Trump to deliver the State of the Union address on Feb. 5, to which Trump accepted the invitation. The State of the Union was originally scheduled for Jan. 29, however, it was delayed after Pelosi refused to host it during the government shutdown.
âI am writing to inform you that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the presidentâs State of the Union address in the House Chamber until the government has been reopened,â Pelosi wrote on Wednesday. (RELATED: Stacey Abrams Allegedly Attempts To Run Illegal Ads In Support Of Non-Existent Gubernatorial Run-Off)
Five days later, after Congress passed a bill to re-open the government, Pelosi sent a second letter to Trump.
âWhen I wrote to you on January 23rd, I stated that we should work together to find a mutually agreeable date when government has reopened to schedule this yearâs State of the Union address,â the Speaker wrote. âIn our conversation today, we agreed on February 5th.â
After losing in November to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, Abrams has been mulling over a second run for the position when his term expires in 2022. However, she is also considering running for Georgiaâs U.S. Senate seat when Republican Sen. David Perdue is up for re-election in 2020.
Abrams and her campaign consistently accused Kemp of racist voter suppression. A spokeswoman for Abramsâ campaign released a statement in October claiming that the he was âmaliciously wielding the power of his office to suppress the vote for political gain and silence the voices of thousands of eligible voters â the majority of them people of color.â
Following Abramsâ loss, she has appeared regularly on cable news shows repeating those assertions. There has been no evidence to corroborate Abramsâ claims.
