Former Obama White House Counsel to be Indicted for Ukrainian Collusion

The Democratic lawyer failed to register as a foreign agent of Ukraine.

Attorneys for former Obama White House Counsel Greg Craig revealed Wednesday that the longtime Democratic lawyer expects to be indicted by federal prosecutors on charges related to his work with the Ukrainian government in 2012.

Findings discovered in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into supposed Russian meddling in American politics may have contributed towards the upcoming charges against Craig. Craig performed work for Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice, and was apparently connected with the Ukrainians through Paul Manafort, the Republican operative indicted by Mueller for overseas political activity.

Craig was originally investigated by the Justice Department for failing to register as a foreign agent while working for the Ukrainian government. However, it seems statues of limitation have since expired for that crime, and his attorneys expect him to be indicted for making false statements to DOJ investigators instead.

Craig was President Obama’s White House Counsel from 2009 to 2010. He also has been a political advisor to liberal bigwigs Ted Kennedy and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

An associate of Hillary and Bill Clinton for decades, the high-society lawyer even rented an apartment to the Clintons as a Yale Law Student in the 1970’s. He would go on to lead the legal team representing President Bill Clinton in impeachment proceedings in the 1990’s.

Craig possibly represents the most high-profile elite Democrat to be indicted for foreign political activities in the past few years. Democratic kingpin Tony Podesta was investigated by Robert Mueller’s team for similarly suspect political activities in Ukraine, which may have involved lavish compensation that went unreported to the American government from pro-Russia political parties. After being investigated, Podesta ultimately wasn’t charged by the government, although the political consulting firm known as the Podesta Group he led with his brother John shut down.

DEMOCRATS ARE SUING TO STOP TRUMP FROM FUNDING BORDER WALL CONSTRUCTION

Democratic leaders voted to file a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s emergency declaration, a move they hope will block the billions in funding he’s accessed for border wall construction.

“The President’s sham emergency declaration and unlawful transfers of funds have undermined our democracy, contravening the vote of the bipartisan Congress, the will of the American people and the letter of the Constitution,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a Thursday statement following the vote.

The Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group, a five-member board that controls the House of Representatives’ general counsel, voted 3-2 on Thursday to authorize a lawsuit against Trump’s emergency declaration. The lawsuit claims the president violated the Constitution’s Appropriations Clause, which gives lawmakers in Congress the authority to control funding measures.

The vote fell strictly along party lines, with Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn voting for it, and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Minority Whip Steve Scalise voting against it.

“The President’s action clearly violates the Appropriations Clause by stealing from appropriated funds, an action that was not authorized by constitutional or statutory authority,” Pelosi continued in her statement. “Congress, as Article I — the first branch, co-equal to the other branches — must reassert its exclusive responsibilities reserved by the text of the Constitution and protect our system of checks and balances.”

This isn’t the first time congressional Democrats have tried to block the emergency declaration, nor is it the first lawsuit.

Both chambers of Congress, with the help of some GOP support, were able to pass a resolution that condemned Trump’s emergency crisis. However, in the first veto of his presidency, he struck it down. Lawmakers were not able to obtain a two-thirds majority in Congress to override the veto.

Trump’s declaration has also been challenged in court from a multitude of state attorneys general, led by California. A handful of progressive and environmental groups are also trying to fight the proclamation in the courtroom. (RELATED: ‘Disastrous Consequences’: Democrats Blast Trump’s Border Wall Threats)

After accepting the $1.375 billion in funds Congress appropriated for border wall construction in February, Trump declared an emergency, authorizing billions more in funding from the military’s budget. The Pentagon has already authorized the Army Corps of Engineers to shift $1 billion to the border wall.

When he originally made his crisis declaration, Trump predicted it would face a lawsuit that would eventually make its way to the Supreme Court.

“We will have a national emergency, and then we will then be sued, and they will sue us in the 9th Circuit, even though it shouldn’t be there,” the president said in February. “And we will possibly get a bad ruling, and then we’ll get another bad ruling. And then we’ll end up in the Supreme Court, and hopefully, we’ll get a fair shake.”

The State Department is preparing to hire anti-Trumper and former Jeb Bush supporter Morgan Ortagus as the department’s new spokesperson, according to reports.

Ortagus, who worked for a super PAC tied to Jeb Bush, had described Donald Trump as “disgusting” in 2016 shortly after he was elected.

“You have somebody who makes fun of people with mental and physical disabilities. That’s disgusting; there’s no other way around it,” she said. “Quite frankly, I don’t want someone with the temperament of a middle school pubescent boy in the president’s office.”

She had also criticized Trump’s foreign policy approach.

“In his gut, he does not think that Americans should be, quote unquote, the policemen of the world,” she said in April 2016.

“I don’t see it that way. I think that America is the glue that holds the world together…So there were points that I agreed with him today, but overall, I fundamentally disagree with his isolationist approach to foreign policy.”

From CNN:

“Former Fox News contributor Morgan Ortagus, the expected pick to become the next State Department spokesperson, repeatedly criticized President Donald Trump during the 2016 Republican presidential primary, a CNN review found.”

“Ortagus publicly lambasted then-candidate Trump over what she called his “isolationist foreign policy approach,” and blasted behavior she qualified as ‘disgusting’ and ‘not serious.’”

“However, she quickly reinvented herself as a vocal Trump supporter after he secured the party’s nomination and has remained a key TV surrogate for the administration over the last two years.”

Ortagus, a former Fox News contributor, is set to replace Heather Nauert after she was tapped to become the UN ambassador.
