Democrats’ plan to end shutdown? Force Trump to give up on border wall, apparently

See the source image

Once Democrats take over the House on January 3, they are planning to pass a government funding bill without any money for the border wall. President Donald Trump shows no sign of caving as shutdown continues, however.

As the impasse between Trump and the Democrats shut down parts of the federal government and forced some 800,000 workers to stay home or work without pay, the incoming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) vowed the president would never get his wall.

Once Pelosi returns from her vacation in Hawaii and gets sworn in, she intends to have the House approve a bill that would fund the Department of Homeland Security until February and not include a penny for the border wall, the New York Times reported citing congressional staff.

Even if the Republican-majority Senate agrees to this – which the leadership has shown no sign of wanting to do – the question will come up again in just a few weeks. Democrats mean to use this to push for broader immigration reform and demonstrate they are the responsible party, according to the Times.

“We’ve got to really learn how to play jujitsu with the president and figure out how to take the wall issue and show the American people that we are the modern party who will actually secure the border and also be for a compassionate immigration system that recognizes the benefits of immigration and diversity,” Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), said in an interview Monday.

Unwilling or unable to pick one objection to Trump’s border wall proposal, they have panned it as “immoral, ineffective and expensive” as well as “fifth-century technology.”

Trump, who campaigned on building a “big, beautiful wall” on the border with Mexico, showed no sign of backing down, however. While Democrats went on vacation, he stayed at the White House and tweeted up a storm, only taking a break for a surprise trip to Iraq and Germany to visit US troops overseas.

In one of the tweets on Monday, Trump reminded Democrats they have voted in favor of a border barrier twice before.

“You voted yes in 2006 and 2013. One more yes, but with me in office,” he wrote. “I’ll get it built, and Fast!”

He also mocked the Democrats’ claim that walls are old technology, quipping “but so is the wheel.”

Trump and the Democrats have clashed over border funding before, resulting in a brief government shutdown in January 2018. At the time, Trump proposed a sweeping amnesty for children brought into the US illegally and their relatives in return for wall funding and immigration reforms. Democrats rejected it, however, and eventually prevailed in getting an omnibus spending bill that ignored immigration altogether, setting the stage for the December 2018 showdown.

Rapper Talib Kweli: ‘Nazi Germany Had a Wall Called the Berlin Wall’

Rapper Talib Kweli gave his fans an incredibly wrong history lesson Friday, saying that the Berlin Wall was created by Nazi Germany and was proof of how “walls didn’t work for Nazis.”

“So, you’re unaware of the fact that nazi Germany had a wall called the Berlin Wall that was torn down in 1991 in order to foster humanity and diversity? Walls didn’t work for Nazis so why build them here? Build bridges not walls Nazi lover,” Talib Kweli said in response to another social media user.

Of course, the Berlin Wall was erected not by Nazi Germany, but by socialist East Germany, which was under the occupation of the communist Soviet Union at the time.

Also, unlike President Donald Trump’s proposed wall along the United States-Mexico border, the Berlin Wall was created to stop people from leaving East Germany’s occupation to travel into free West Berlin.

Talib Kweli’s social media posts are not only fact-deficient, they are often hate-filled and vitriolic. In 2016, the “Get By” rapper attacked Breitbart News’ Jerome Hudson, repeatedly disparaging him with the racial slur “coon.”

Twitter, despite their strict enforcement of rules when it comes to conservatives, took no action despite Kweli repeatedly racially abusing people on the platform over political disagreements.

SCHUMER SHUTDOWN: Cryin’ Chuck Says Dems Will Block Government Funding

By

Chuck Schumer took to the Senate floor to take full credit for the impending government shutdown.

The Democrat leader said his caucus refuses to fund the government all because President Trump wants $5 billion dollars to begin construction on the border wall with Mexico.

In 2013, Democrats blamed Ted Cruz for shutting down the government because of his attempt to block Obamacare funding. But now in 2018, when Senate Democrats are using the exact same strategy, it’s somehow Republicans’ fault.

The facts are clear, the GOP Congress sent a bill to the Senate that would fund the government. Democrats are refusing to pass the bill.

There’s no doubt, it’s a Schumer Shutdown.

And don’t forget, Mitch McConnell passed a funding bill with wide Democrat support earlier in the week.

Wonder what Mitch is saying to Chuck here…

Update: The House has voted to meet tomorrow at Noon, 12 hours into the potential government shutdown.

McConnell, meanwhile, said that the Senate voted to proceed “in order to maintain maximum flexibility” to cut a later funding deal. That said, there is no agreement on funding, which CNN’s Manu Raju suggests means there is no chance Trump gets his $5 billion in wall funding.

Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) said Friday that Senate leaders have an “agreement” in place for a House-passed stopgap measure to avert a government shutdown which includes funding for President Trump’s border wall.

Emerging from a meeting in Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) office, Corker said that Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and McConnell are expected to enter into an agreement on the Senate floor, according to The Hill.

“This is will be an agreement between McConnell and Schumer about what next happens on the Senate floor. You’ll see them to enter into a little discussion,” said Corker. “It charts the course forward that gives us the best chance of actually coming to a solution.”

Corker suggested that a government shutdown may be averted – citing meetings with White House officials.

“Some of the folks at the White House seem to be optimistic,” he said, adding that President Trump “is very aware of what’s happening.”

The potential breakthrough comes after Schumer met with Vice President Pence, incoming White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and White House advisor Jared Kushner on Friday afternoon.

The negotiations later moved over to the House, with Pence, Mulvaney and Kushner huddling in Speaker Paul Ryan’s ceremonial office with Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), Freedom Caucus leaders Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Republican Study Committee Chairman Mark Walker (R-N.C.).

Corker warned that the danger of a partial government shutdown is not completely gone. –The Hill

“It’s just how we’re going to proceed in a manner that we think is best,” said Corker. “The first discussion is not substance, it’s process.”

Meanwhile, looks like Trump may go medieval on illegal border crossers…

Pickup Packed With 11 Passengers Crashes After Fleeing Border Patrol

3 dead, 8 injured after high speed chase

A high-speed chase near the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County ended with three dead and eight injured after a Chevrolet pickup attempted to flee an enforcement stop, hit a spike strip and rolled into an embankment on Interstate 8, authorities said in a statement.

The pickup was carrying 11 people — 9 of whom were lying unrestrained in the bed — while weaving through traffic and traveling at speeds of more than 100 mph, witnesses said. A male driver and a female passenger were believed to be seated in the cab of the truck, CHP spokesman Officer Travis Garrow said.

Border Patrol agents had attempted to conduct an enforcement stop around 4:30 p.m. but the driver reportedly failed to yield to the Border Patrol’s marked vehicle and fled, authorities said.

Agents deployed a spike strip as the vehicle traveled westbound and the driver lost control, became airborne and rolled down an embankment into a two-lane interstate east of Crestwood Road, authorities said, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

A California Highway Patrol spokesman told Fox News the agency will release a press release Friday with further information. Border Patrol did not immediately return Fox News’ request for comment.

Three of the occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, while the other eight suffered “major to minor” injuries, authorities said. The injured parties were transported to several local hospitals.

The driver is believed to be a U.S. citizen and is now in U.S. Border Patrol custody while being treated for his injuries, KFMB-TV reported, citing authorities.

None of the occupants’ identities were released. It wasn’t immediately clear whether they were part of the migrant caravan currently awaiting entry at San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego. Authorities do not suspect alcohol or drugs were involved in the collision.

The CHP is now handling the investigation.

AT LEAST 5 DEAD AFTER SUV CARRYING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS CRASHES, SHERIFF SAYS

Thursday’s crash is not the first fatal accident involving U.S. Border Patrol. Another high-speed chase with the agency in June ended when an SUV carrying illegal immigrants crashed, ejecting 12 people — five of whom were killed — near the Texas-Mexico border. That chased also topped 100 mph, and the driver was also believed to be an American citizen.
